A quick lunchtime blog

I don’t know why leg pressing gets such a bad rap? I think it is one of those fad things…that all machine exercises are inherently bad and that everything has to be done with free weights.

We do a lot of single leg work…well not me obviously…I don’t train for religious reasons…but THEY do a lot of single leg work.

I’ll tell you something else that will shock you….we do a lot of seated leg extensions as well…shocked? You know in 20 years I’ve never seen and I can’t think of one single athlete that I know of that has ever had any sort of knee injury I could possibly attribute any contribution to from doing leg extensions…what I do know is that in 20 odd years of coaching and training probably 50 or more athletes alone who have fixed or reduced tendonitis type knee issues doing amongst other things controlled eccentrics on the leg extension machine….but what the hell would I know.

Anyway here is another standing ab/trunk band variation.

Try not to look as uncomfortable with it as this guy.

  1. You’re a thief.

I was planning a new series of blog posts/articles called “I heard it on the internet” and the first one I was going to do was going to be that you should NEVER EVER use machines.

My lawyer will be in touch

    Lyle

  2. You’re getting a lot of stuff stolen from you, these days.

Regarding the leg extension issue, i think it really comes down to how you use it and if it’s really that useful, when compared to other exercises. I still don’t like it. Not that i think it’s BAD, but, generally, there are better options.

There are situations where it may be useful, though.

    This is true.

I already have a chapter with that title in one of my books…you can feel free to summarise the chapter….but only once.

My lawyer will be in touch.

You have the busiest lawyer on the interweb.

Me or Lyle? The answer is yes though to both. I had a GAA player come and see me a little while ago with some questions about the pre season program they’d been given by their trainer…it looked very familiar…I showed him the original version…it was a rehab program I had written for a rugby player about 7 years ago….only his copy didn’t have my name or details on it and had a very different letterhead…funny that.

Absolutely….Max Effort Leg Extensions = Bad…1RM Leg Extension testing = Bad.

and if it’s really that useful,

It is….really that useful that is.

    when compared to other exercises.

For very few players or athletes its an either or scenario….everyone else can do them as well as all the other good exercises.

    I still don’t like it.

How can you ‘not like’ a piece of equipment? That’s extremely ghey. What you mean is that you don’t use them.

Not that i think it’s BAD, but, generally, there are better options.

This is true I suppose…there are better options….except of course for leg extensions for which leg extensions are clearly the best.

There are situations where it may be useful, though.

Like when you need to do leg extensions you mean?

Take a day or two off to freshen up…the test. I want you to redo your 6×30/30 rowing test as well and send me all your results.

I am about 6 days behind in my emails at the moment so I will get to yours as soon as I get to it….it’s 1.45am and I’m working at 7am…it is not going great for me time wise…we’ll get you sorted though. Send us some pics from the base in Kosovo and send us your results.

  6. Do you use the single leg press to help correct strength imbalances and what type of rep scheme are you using?

    That’s one of the reasons…everything from 5’s to 12’s.
