Putting the dangers of Windscreen Wipers and Sit Ups into perspective…

…this is not to say that proper exercise technique and application should be dismissed but come on seriously…this is training…this isn’t even being done competitively

Some live scrummaging practice…do you think sit ups is the biggest risk to these lads backs?

Logi played most of the games at the end of last season while recovering from a broken back…and no…it wasn’t from doing sit ups or windscreen wipers.

I bet the lads wish that it was Logi who one the Fatathon…thankfully though he’s only 120+kgs.

Logi likes lineout’s only because being lifted is so slimming.

This is why we push press.

  1. will just thoughted i would get in first with some questions if you don’t mind.
    1) Do you work with any league players in ireland? (also do you follow any particular aussie football code)
    2) with regards to field sport players (eg bball or rugby) what is the minimum of cardio you would use in the offseason if it had to be put on the backburner to allow for more muscle or strength development?
    3) i realise a certain style of video is off limits but would we be able to see a live inverted row and 3 rm test?
    4) a few posts back a guy is doing scap work with a band around him could you explain for what reason he was doing this?
5)have you ever worked with powerlifters or bodybuilders? ( i ask this to get a better idea of your background)
    6) finally have you ever had people using front squats go dizzy weak or faint (due to cutting blood off to the head) and what technique corrections would you advise to fix this and stop it recurring?
thanks again for your time and i hope you realise your blog is most definitely the most regularly updated in the fitness world.

Yes and yes…I follow the AFL, NRL and Super 14’s.

That’s a how long is a piece of string question…I don’t have a stock standard answer for you as it would be athlete dependent.
    3) i realise a certain style of video is off limits but would we be able to see a live inverted row and 3 rm test?
If people asked like that they would of got what they wanted. There is already a 3Rm Pull Up test posted on the blog…Killers 70lbish effort. I will put an inverted row test as well.
    4) a few posts back a guy is doing scap work with a band around him could you explain for what reason he was doing this?
At a guess I’d say because I made him…I’ll have to take a look…actually you take a look and tell me which image you’re talking about.
5)have you ever worked with powerlifters or bodybuilders? ( i ask this to get a better idea of your background)
Yes and yes and I still do.
    6) finally have you ever had people using front squats go dizzy weak or faint (due to cutting blood off to the head) and what technique corrections would you advise to fix this and stop it recurring?
Try not putting the thing on your throat would be a good start. The other thing is I don’t use front squats as a high rep exercise so it really isn’t a problem for me or anyone who’s programs I write.

    Thanks I think.

  3. Maybe im beeing a complete jerk but I don’t see the need for either sit ups or windscreen wipers in their program, just as I don’t really see them having any use of a overhead cable curl… 🙂

Well I wouldn’t say you were being a COMPLETE jerk.

Tell them to shrug their shoulders up slightly in the rack and to starighten their head pulling their throat back from the bar. Most lifters hold their braeth on the way down and breathe out when they hit the sticking point.

  6. will just wanted to thank you for answering those questions and clear up somethings
    1) good answer on the cardio issue as i could immediatley think of a variety of athletes who would have varying needs for cardio. i really need to think of better questions
    2) sorry to be a pain but i meant the squat 3rm test sorry should have been clearer
    3) with regards to the band work i gather the player was workin on correct scap positioning and learning to correctly use his rhomboids to resist the bands pulling force
4)continuing the front squat questions do you try to tech the clean grip first and then change if they just can’t get it right or does it depend on the players sport?
    5) a question regarding your appearance did you ever have issues with it hampering your position as a coach? this could relate to demonstrating an exercise, getting a job or convincing a client you know your stuff
again thanks for time and patience

Also thank to garretfor your post
