Informed Performance

This blog hopefully will be about the athletes I coach and how I coach them…that and a place for me to crap on and moan in equal measure.

About the Gym and Me

Who I am

My name is Will Heffernan and I’m a strength and conditioning coach. I bet people that know me thought I was going to say that ‘My name is Will Heffernan and I’m an alcoholic’ but that would be a lie and I’ve no idea how that rumour started…although I’ve a vague recollection that it might have been me that started the rumour but I think I might of been drunk at the time.

As I was saying…I am a strength and conditioning coach working mainly in the area of weights training and fitness training for sport. I work with a large number of sports at everything from club, national and international level. Working with the full spectrum of athletes from juniors to masters athletes and both men and women…I’ve a couple of athletes that might be trans-gender as well…but I’ll let them work that out for themselves.

Location

The facility is located on the grounds of  St Mary’s College Rugby Club off Templeville Rd in Tempelogue. If you are looking for a map you’ll find it here.

So how does training work?

The gym is essentially a private facility and training goes on all day from early till late. There are a number of professional and semi professional athletes for example doing two sessions a day morning and night. Then there are people coming in just to get fit or lose some lard or have been referred to me for their rehabilitation. Essentially I cater for everyone who is interested in helping themselves. The only thing that’s standard is that everyone who trains in the gym is getting supervised and coached by me…they are doing my programs under my watchful eye…unless I don’t like them or don’t care in which case I haven’t got a clue what they are doing because I’m not really paying attention.

So what do you get?

When you start you get a full screening with Dave Lyons who thankfully works in the facility…which is great because if I break anyone I can quickly get Dave to put them back together before anyone notices…so…you do a full head to toe screen with Dave then a full fitness test with me. We work out and agree a training program for you. Then over the coming month you get to sweat and ache and I get to make fun of you and harass you in a completely constructive manner. A lot of people come and do a month…like a training camp. Get themselves sorted and their injuries and niggles tidied up. Learn a tonne about training then go about their merry way. Some come do a month and then after I write their program for them go off back to their own gym and train for a few months before coming back and doing a month with me again before heading off again. Still others come and have never left…some I’ve even offered to buy gym memberships so they’d piss off but still they come. Basically I look after a broad spectrum of clients with very diverse goals and priorities but we pretty much always make it work.

How much does it cost?

It costs €105 a month….which is a shitload of money considering gym memberships are going for around €300-€400 a year…but take a look around your gym and see what sort of progress most of those members are paying and you’ll see why some people are paying to get some results. I not really interested in trying to sell anyone on the deal…what I will say is that if you’d have come to me for a consultation it’d would of cost you €55…and that’s just to listen to me crap on. I still do private and at home personal training for those that prefer that for €105 a session. So considering if you are super keen and train 5 days a week as lots of my clients it works out to around €5 a session for what is essentially personal training…which is a bloody bargain so stop moaning.

Anything Else?

If there’s anything I’ve left out or that you want to know about me and or the gym that you can’t find out from the blog then just post you questions here in the comments section and I will answer them as soon as I can.

    Hi Will,

Was rowing competitively over the past few years but damaged a disc in my back in early Nov last year which killed off my season – have been doing a bit of indoor and more recently outdoor biking but looking to train for Gael Force West adventure race in late August. Back is still at me a bit – can you assess – hear you are opening north side – do you have a date yet and where might i get more info.

    Thanks in advance,

    Alan…

    • Mate,
This was definitely the wrong place to leave this question…this is like the blogs ‘broom closet’. Drop myself or Barry and email and we’ll give you all the information you want.

I would link to your blog and you would link to mine http://squatracktips.com in your “Sites I like” section. Please, let me know if you are interested?
